A GPS dog collar is a device that is used by dog owners to know the precise position of their pets. GPS (Global Positioning System) is not only used to track lost dogs, this technology is also being used in different tracking devices that help in finding certain destinations and people. GPS actually refers to a system of satellites and receivers that allow people and devices to locate exact positions. The satellites are actually operated by the United States Department of Defense but anyone is allowed to use them for free. With the use of the satellites that revolve on the earth twice a day, devices that are armed with GPS receive transmissions which will give an accurate positioning data.

GPS dog collars have two main components – the GPS collar and the receiver. The GPS collar is the one that your dog can wear. It is the one responsible of sending the information regarding the dog’s location to the receiver uninterruptedly. Then with an LCD screen on the receiver, you can then access all the necessary information to locate your pet.

However, the tracking range may vary. Mostly, the device can track the location of your dog up to 1 mile but there are some that can track even longer distances. Given this, in the event that your dog is no longer within range, the device will only send the dog’s last location and as soon as he comes back into range, the receiver automatically picks up his present location again.

Even if you have more than one dog, the device will still work for you. There are models that allow you to monitor multiple pets at the same time. You don’t have to worry that much about losing your dog with the use of such device.

A GPS dog tracking collar can be used in different ways like tracking you dog during hunting, if he gets stuck underground, during long walks or whatever purpose it may serve. Basing on how and where you are going to use a dog GPS collar, its capacity and features should tailor fit to each situation. For instance, if you are going to let your dog wear a GPS collar while hunting, the collar should be as durable as possible. You can never tell what your dog could go through in the woods. You might want to consider a fully waterproof model as well just to make sure that it will not be damaged by water. There are different models of such device that offers different capacity and features, that is why careful consideration is needed to get the right one
